Many times, as we age or face sickness or injury, we find ourselves unable to do what we once did with such ease. It is often in those moments that the enemy creeps in and begins to whisper that our value has somehow decreased. That our best days are behind us, and our usefulness has run its course.
But what if that isn't the end of the story? What if that is actually the very moment God desires to redirect your energy toward a new work, a work only you can do in this season? This new chapter is not a step down, but simply a redirection.
I was privileged to pastor a remarkable woman in the last church I served before retirement. Due to age and declining health, walking any significant distance had become a real challenge. Many times I watched her make her way through the front doors of the church, only to need a chair just inside the foyer to catch her breath. But this dear woman carried one of the most important ministries in our entire congregation. She sent cards.
Not five or ten cards to a select few. She sent a card to every person who missed church on Sunday. She sent cards to anyone who was sick or going through a difficult time. Whenever a visitor walked through our doors, she always made sure to get their information, because she wanted to send them a card too.
Through the years, she sent thousands of cards. Quietly. Faithfully. Never asking for recognition, never seeking anything in return. She simply found the ministry she could do, and she did it with her whole heart. That is the beauty of redirection. God never wastes a willing vessel, regardless of age or ability.
